Questions & Answers

Everything you
want to know

New to Pilates, new to me, or just curious? If your question isn’t here, reach out — I’m happy to chat before you commit to anything.

Getting Started
Everyone. The work starts where you are and keeps finding ways to challenge you, whether it’s your first session or your hundredth. I work with complete beginners, people returning after time away, those training alongside another sport, anyone focused on moving well as they age, clients with injuries or chronic conditions, and mothers during pregnancy and postpartum. If you have a specific concern, reach out before booking and I’ll be straightforward about what I can help with.
Yes. Sessions are private and always start where you are — but that doesn’t mean easy. The classical method is built on precision and control, and most people are surprised by how much it asks of them from the very first session. The work is accessible and progressive, but it will challenge you. That’s the point.
It’s how I found Pilates myself — and what still surprises me about it. Most people who train hard have never been asked to move with the level of control and precision that classical Pilates requires. Even strong, athletic people find it genuinely challenging in a way they didn’t expect. It targets the stabilisers and deeper musculature that most training skips, addresses imbalances, and builds the kind of body awareness that makes every other physical practice better. Equal parts strength and stretch. Real cross-training — not as a break from your sport, but as something that directly elevates it.
Comfortable, fitted clothing you can move in — nothing too loose, so I can see how your body is moving. Pilates is done barefoot or in grip socks. For studio sessions, everything else is provided. If you’re booking an on-location session, I’ll let you know in advance what to have on hand.
Classical Pilates
Classical Pilates refers to the original method as Joseph Pilates developed it — a specific sequence of exercises, performed in a specific order, on the mat and on apparatus like the Reformer. Joseph Pilates originally called his method Contrology, defined as the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. The order of exercises matters: each one is designed to prepare the body for what comes next, building strength, awareness, and control progressively. It is a complete system built around six founding principles: breath, concentration, centering, control, precision, and flow.

Most Pilates taught today — particularly in group fitness settings — is a contemporary or hybrid version: exercises reordered, blended with other modalities, adapted for large classes. Classical Pilates preserves the original sequence and exercises exactly as Joseph Pilates designed them, because the order is intentional. Each exercise prepares the body for the next.

There is no loud music, no chasing a burn. The focus is entirely on how you move — your breath, your alignment, your centre, the quality of every single repetition. Classical teachers undergo hundreds of hours of training across the full repertoire, including work with injuries, pregnancy, and special populations. The standard is specific and it is upheld.

Once you experience it, the difference is obvious. It is deeply athletic and deeply precise — and that combination is rare.

Romana Kryzanowska was Joseph Pilates’ protégée and the person he trusted to carry on his work. She taught the classical method for decades and trained a generation of teachers who now teach teachers themselves. I trained in that direct line, which means the work I teach has been passed down with care and fidelity to the original method. It matters to me that what I’m offering is the real thing.
Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology — the coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Control here means mastery, not restriction. It’s about moving with awareness and intention. Ten thoughtful repetitions will always matter more than thirty mindless ones.
The classical order exists for good reasons, but it’s a framework not a fixed script. Every exercise has modifications, variations, and progressions. Props add support or challenge as needed. No two sessions look exactly the same because no two bodies, or days, are the same.
The Practice
50 minutes, private, one-on-one. Every session is built around you — your body, your history, your goals. We work on the mat and Reformer using the classical repertoire, with props incorporated as relevant. Sessions are held in Encinitas (address shared on booking) or on location.

Often yes. I have experience working with clients managing lower back pain, disc issues, scoliosis, osteoporosis, hypermobility, post-surgical recovery, arthritis, chronic pain, neurological conditions, and diastasis recti, among others.

Before we begin I’ll always have a conversation with you about your history. I’ll be honest about what I can help with and what falls outside my scope, and I encourage anyone with an active medical condition to have clearance from their doctor first.

Yes — and it’s a population I work with thoughtfully. Whether you’re expecting, recently postpartum, or somewhere in between, sessions are fully adapted to where your body is. During pregnancy, modifications are made trimester by trimester — positioning, props like a wedge, and exercises that support breath, core connection, and spinal health as your body changes. The classical method lends itself beautifully to this work: it is precise, internal, and never about intensity for its own sake.

Postpartum, we rebuild gradually and with care — starting from the inside out. I’m happy to work alongside your OB, midwife, or pelvic floor physio. Please have medical clearance before we begin.

Sessions & Logistics
In Encinitas — address shared on booking. Mat sessions at your location are also available. Reach out to discuss.
Head to the booking page to reserve your first session, or send a message through the contact form if you’d like to chat first. I’ll follow up to confirm everything before we meet.
Private one-on-one sessions are the core of what I do. Beyond that I’m open to conversations about other formats — small groups, corporate wellness, events, or other arrangements. Get in touch if you have something specific in mind.
A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged the full session fee. This policy exists out of respect for your time and mine — your slot is reserved exclusively for you, which means it cannot be offered to someone else at the last minute. I appreciate your understanding.
